One of the very few rules that I’ve had at Pink Slip since the day we opened, in simple terms, there is no fighting.
Retail breeds anger, anger breeds resentment, resentment breeds fights…especially among ladies. I’ve worked enough retail jobs to know how this cycle rolls.
The first thing I remember telling our very first new hires was that we would not tolerate any kind of judgement, attitude, or problems among employees. It wasn’t so hard with only a group of 5 who all seemed to like each other.
Now, we’re a group anywhere from 7 to 15, depending on the time of year, and every new employee hears the same speech. There’s no fighting. If you don’t like each other, we don’t want to know about it, at all, ever.
As one of the very few things I’ve gotten right in life, this place has always been a peaceful and happy place to exist.
I’ve never had to referee an argument. I’ve never had to deal with employee tears that were caused by hurt feelings related to work. I have never had to play the HR card and reprimand any of my employees. You can measure success in many ways, but for me, this is the ultimate.
I may not be the best manager, or leader, my methods are sometimes unconventional, but I try pretty hard to make sure that my employees enjoy coming to work and they know what they do is valued, always.
While we’ve had a lot of amazing people work here throughout the years, I am really enjoying our current staff. They are exceptionally hard workers. They take our suggestions and advice every day and work harder to achieve their goals. Saying that I have been lucky with this group is a complete understatement.
I hope I can continue to learn to be a more inspiring leader and someone who people really enjoy working for!
